Alexander McLean

Alexander McLean is the founder and CEO of Justice Defenders, a global movement equipping prisoners and prison officers to study law, provide legal services, and transform justice systems from within.

Since beginning this work as a university student, Alexander has spent nearly two decades building an organisation rooted in the belief that those closest to injustice should be closest to its repair. Justice Defenders now works across African prisons, training incarcerated people and prison staff as paralegals, supporting law degrees behind bars, and providing practical legal assistance to people who would otherwise face the courts alone.

A former barrister and one of the youngest magistrates appointed in the Midlands, Alexander brings a rare combination of legal expertise, moral imagination, entrepreneurial leadership and lived proximity to some of the world’s most overlooked communities. Under his leadership, Justice Defenders has supported tens of thousands of people in navigating the justice system, enabled prisoners and prison officers to become advocates for others, and shown governments, funders and institutions a radically hopeful model of justice.

Alexander’s work has been featured by CNN, The Economist, The Telegraph, The Spectator and other international media. He has been recognised as a Senior TED Fellow, an Ashoka Fellow, a Time “30 under 30” changemaker, and the University of Nottingham’s first Alumni Laureate. In 2018, he received an honorary doctorate from BPP University in recognition of his contribution to justice.
